Air India on Tuesday introduced a new “Basic” fare on select domestic routes, stripping out the complimentary meal that comes with its fuller economy offerings.

The airline is restricting the Basic fare to Economy Class and includes 15 kg of checked baggage, 7 kg of cabin baggage, and a choice of tea or coffee. Air India said the fare is a “new option for value-conscious travelers.”

“The introduction of Basic fare simply adds another layer of choice, particularly for price-conscious travellers who prefer a more unbundled offering,” the airline said.

The fare is not currently available on busy routes such as Delhi-Mumbai. However, a Skift review of available bookings found that on Delhi-Chandigarh, the Economy fare starts at INR 3,530 ($37) for Basic,
