Air India on Thursday announced an order for 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft and the conversion of 15 Airbus A321neo jets into the longer-range A321XLR.

The additional Boeing order comprises 20 737-8s and 10 higher-capacity 737-10s, taking Air India’s total firm orders with Boeing to 250 aircraft. The Airbus move converts 15 of the airline’s earlier A321neo commitment into the A321XLR, a narrowbody aircraft capable of flying long international sectors traditionally served by smaller widebodies.

The 30-aircraft Boeing add-on builds on the airline’s landmark 2023 order for 220 Boeing jets, part of the reset that followed Tata Group’s takeover in 2022. So far, Air India has taken delivery of 52 aircraft from that order, which includes 51 Boeing 737-8s now flying with Air India Express, and one Boeing 787-9 entering service on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route from February 1, leaving 198 Boeing aircraft still to come.
