Indian airlines posted a loss of nearly INR 53 billion ($576 million) in the 2024-25 financial year, as per information shared by the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation on Monday. This was a near fivefold increase in losses from the 2023-24 financial year, when airlines reported losses of INR 9.2 billion ($100.8 million).

The losses came despite a 7.7% growth in domestic air passenger traffic during 2024-25.

Indian Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol attributed the losses to multiple factors, such as: “seat occupancy, fuel costs, aircraft capacity, seasonal fluctuations and other relevant factors.”

In another statement, the minister elaborated on the drivers of loss: “Domestic airlines face financial challenges such as volatility in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, exchange rate fluctuations, high operating costs, competitive pricing pressures and supply chain constraints affecting aircraft availability.”
