Three distinct bets are emerging among the companies that control most of the world’s online travel: the model layer, the orchestration layer, and the product layer. A fourth, the legibility layer, is being built underneath all of them by the infrastructure players. And above all of them sits an OS and platform layer that could make every other position irrelevant. 

Each bet is rational, each carries a different kind of risk. And each implies a different answer to the question that AI is forcing on the OTAs, which is not “how do you use it” but “what are you for.”

The Model Layer

One Booking Holdings job posting I came across this week made the model layer bet visible. The role is for a machine learning manager focused on generative AI foundation models, based in Amsterdam. Booking says the team is building LLMs designed specifically for the travel domain, trained on the company’s own textual data.
