The World Travel & Tourism Council published its annual Economic Impact Research on Monday. The main message was the same as it has been for as long as I can remember: travel contributed a record amount to the global economy, supported a record number of jobs, grew faster than the global average, and governments everywhere should please recognize the sector as a strategic priority.

For 2025, the record contribution was $11.6 trillion; the jobs number was 366 million; and the growth rate was 4.1% versus global GDP growth of 2.8%. The press release calls travel and tourism ‘the world’s fastest-growing sector’ — a claim that stopped me cold and sent me down this rabbit hole.

The industry’s triumphalist claims deserve a closer look.
