The war on junk fees is far from over, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he’s ready to crack down. 

On January 5, he signed an executive order creating a new “Citywide Junk Fee Task Force.” Overseen by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, the task force will develop new rules, investigate violations, and make recommendations for future legislation.

Its reach is broad, targeting everything from subscriptions to concert tickets. The travel industry is likely to face increased scrutiny, with the Mayor’s office specifically calling out airline bookings in a press release.

It’s still early days — the task force is in the process of being formed — but here’s what we know so far, based on Skift’s interview with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection and other reporting.
