Guidance for international travelers visiting the U.S. increasingly warns of border detentions, violence, and complications for transgender travelers — even if countries maintain that travel risks for the U.S. remain low.

Belgium updated its guidance this year to warn that U.S. demonstrations may turn violent. Spain last year emphasized that overstays can have serious consequences. And Germany’s website now stresses that valid travel documents don’t guarantee entry. 

The concern for U.S. tourism is whether this sort of language could influence international visitation, which is already under pressure. Travelers from major source markets have previously cited politics, safety, and cost as the main reasons they have pulled back on travel to the U.S., according to a 2025 report from Skift Research. 

Visitation to the U.S. fell 5.5% in 2025 from the year prior, according to National Travel and Tourism Office data. The hope for 2026 is that
