Why Lemon Tree’s Restructuring Matters Beyond One Hotel Chain in India

Lemon Tree Hotels on Saturday announced a restructuring plan that will separate the hotel company into an asset-light operating company with Lemon Tree Hotels, and an asset-heavy hotel ownership platform called Fleur Hotels. Lemon Tree will transfer its owned hotels to Fleur and focus instead on running brands, managing hotels, and signing new management and franchise contracts.

At the same time, private equity firm Warburg Pincus will also buy Dutch asset manager APG’s 41.09% stake in Fleur and invest up to INR 9.6 billion ($106 million) of fresh capital in stages to fund Fleur’s growth.

This move turns Lemon Tree into the operator and makes Fleur one of India’s largest institutional hotel owners.
