Bangladesh directed its diplomatic missions in India to temporarily suspend visa services in the country citing security tensions. Diplomatic ties between the two countries remain strained.
The restriction applies to the country’s missions in New Delhi, Kolkata, and Agartala, while its missions in Mumbai and Chennai continue visa services. These restrictions also do not apply to business and work visas.
Ties between the two countries have been tense since violent public movements in July and August 2024 led to the removal of Bangladesh’s previous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government. Amidst the tumult, India placed limits on visas issued to Bangladeshi nationals.
Bangladesh’s decision highlights that India may have big numbers, but not everyone is fighting for them, and that India is not the only market making travel decisions based on national political positions.
